The importance of accomodation

When you are choosing accommodation

You arrive at the hotel, hostel, or Airbnb you booked three months ago. And you discover the photos are from five years ago. Or it's forty blocks from the nearest subway station. Or that "breakfast included" actually costs extra.

This happens constantly. And most of these problems are entirely avoidable if you know what questions to ask before you pay, not after.

Accommodation is more than just a place to sleep

Most people choose accommodation based on two things: price and location. They matter but they're only 40% of the equation. What really matters is how your accommodation affects the rest of your trip.

A chain hotel isn't the same as an Airbnb. A hostel isn't the same as a boutique hotel. The risks and benefits change depending on what type you choose.

Traditional hotels (chains and independencies) usually are regulated and legally responsable, the late check-in requires prior contact, have more protection if problems arise but generally are more expensive.

Airbnb and short-term rentals can offer more variety and flexibility, although photos may not match reality and the host policy can be a game changer.

Hostels offer more sociability but less privacy, are better if you're traveling solo and you don’t mind the noise or have a tight budget.

Boutique hostels and luxury Airbnbs tend to have more reliable photos, a more personalized experience and higher cleanliness standards.

What most people don't verify (but should)

Before you book anything, you need to know this:

Real location vs. map location Your maps app lies, because the pin doesn't always show where the entrance actually is. Is it on an upper floor? Are there stairs to climb? Look for reviews that mention access and the specific neighborhood.

Whether the photos are actually current When were they taken? On Airbnb, if all the photos are professional but the host joined three months ago, something's off. Check Google Street View or recent reviews of the same place.

Cancellation and refund policies What happens if the place isn't what it promised? What's the time limit to cancel? With hotels it's clearer. With Airbnb it varies wildly.

Who responds if there's a problem Does the hotel have 24-hour front desk? Does the host respond in hours or take days? This matters when there's no hot water at 2 AM.

Access to public transportation Being five blocks from the subway is different from twenty. A "nearby bus station" could be one block away or a thirty-minute walk. Map the route from the place to where you actually want to go.

Included services vs. services that cost extra WiFi? Breakfast? Air conditioning? Luggage storage? Some places add hidden costs after your initial booking.

The catch: it depends on where you're traveling

The accommodation situation isn't the same everywhere. In established tourist cities, there's more regulation and higher standards. In less touristy destinations, there's less traveler protection.

What worked in Barcelona could be a disaster in a remote town. A reliable Airbnb in Buenos Aires might be very different from one in a city where the host has no track record.

Details that matter more than you'd think

Cleanliness It's reason number one for complaints. Read reviews specifically looking for the words "clean" or "dirty." If you see multiple mentions of filth, avoid the place.

Noise "There may be some noise" is code for "you probably won't sleep." If the place is in a nightlife zone, figure out whether that works for you.

Reliable WiFi It's not a luxury, it's essential. If your plans include working remotely, confirm there's real internet, not "WiFi that works sometimes."

You can't enjoy a trip from a bad accommodation

Plan your trip however you want. But where you sleep, where you leave your things, where you rest between activities determines everything else.

Good accommodation means being able to focus on exploring, meeting people, having experiences. Bad accommodation means troubleshooting when you should be enjoying yourself.
