Some ideas about the checklist.

Every seasoned traveler has a story about something that almost went wrong at the airport: A passport that expired two weeks ag, a visa they assumed they didn't need, a vaccination certificate sitting on the kitchen table.

The difference between a smooth departure and a last-minute crisis usually isn't luck, it's preparation. This checklist covers everything you need to check before you board an international flight, organized by category so nothing slips through.

1. Your Passport

Your passport is the foundation of international travel. Even if it hasn't expired, there are three things you need to verify every single time:

  • Valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates (some countries require this)
  • Has enough blank pages for entry/exit stamps (usually 2 minimum)
  • Name matches exactly what's on your flight ticket

Some countries have stricter validity requirements than the standard 6-month rule. Always check the specific requirement for your destination.

2. Visa & Entry Requirements

This is where most travelers get caught off guard because visa requirements change, and they vary based on your passport, not your destination. What's visa-free for one nationality may require an advance application for another.

  • Do you need a visa? (Check based on your passport nationality, not just the destination)
  • If Visa on Arrival: do you meet all conditions? (Proof of funds, return ticket, accommodation)
  • If eVisa: applied well in advance and received approval confirmation?
  • Transit visa: required if you're connecting through a third country?

Don't rely on outdated info or traveler forums. Entry requirements can change with little notice.

3. Health Requirements

Post-2020, health requirements have become a standard part of international entry checklists. Even where requirements have eased, some destinations still enforce specific rules.

  • Required vaccinations confirmed and documented (Yellow Fever is mandatory for entry in several countries)
  • Health declaration or passenger locator form completed if required
  • Travel insurance with medical coverage, not just trip cancellation

Travel insurance is worth emphasizing: emergency medical evacuation abroad can cost tens of thousands of dollars without coverage. Although it could look like optional, It's not recommended.

4. Travel Documents

Beyond your passport and visa, border agents and airline staff can ask for supporting documents, especially if you're traveling on a tourist or visitor entry.

  • Flight confirmation (printed or offline on your phone, don't rely on WiFi at the airport)
  • Accommodation proof: hotel booking, rental confirmation, or invitation letter
  • Onward travel proof: return flight or next destination booking
  • Emergency contacts list, accessible offline and self-explanatory in the case you can’t explain who is who.
  • Copies of all key documents stored separately from the originals

Pro tip: create a group with yourself and have all the info there (also have everything on a pendrive, just in case).
